Edible Elegance got its start from the student/teacher relationship cultivated by its owners. Chasity Russell had been working from home decorating cakes and sweets for clients while teaching a cake decorating class at a local craft store. Mark and Wendy Turner decided to take some classes from her; and so started the chain of events that led them to open the three-way partnership. The owners all worked full-time jobs and came to rely on each other to help with tasks they could not complete separately.
The partners valued timely words of guidance from knowledgeable sources as great benefit. A community college course outlined the requirements of a business plan and raised questions about running a business that were difficult for the budding entrepreneurs to answer. After looking into online resources and talking to some local business owners who might serve as mentors, the trio accepted an invitation to take classes taught by the local SBDC. Parts of the business plan for Edible Elegance were re-written as the classes inspired better ways of accomplishing goals.
